ABOUT CAROL HORNIG

The tools for healing are many, the true healer is rare.”

Ancient Vedic Medical Text

The seeds of my career were planted when the Red Cross came to my elementary school to tell us about the work they do.  They gave us little buttons to wear with the Red Cross on it.  I was so proud to wear it.  Even then I knew I wanted to help others.

I began as a certified nutritionist and health educator, treating a wide range of dietary and health conditions.  These included eating disorders and other dietary problems, as well as breast cancer nutrition, wellness counseling and preventative care.

Very early in my career, I saw firsthand how our ability to nourish ourselves depends on our psychology, our emotions, and our sense of self.  I realized how hungry we are for nourishment of the mind and spirit as well as the body.

At the North Nassau Mental Health Center, (an orthomolecular psychiatric center founded by Dr. David Hawkins in 1958.)  I participated in pioneering clinical work that was the precursor to what is now nutritional genomics.  This experience taught me both the potential and the limitations of dietary approaches to restoring physical and mental health.

During my tenure as chief nutritionist at the Strang Cancer Prevention Center, (the oldest cancer prevention center in the United States, an affiliate of New York Weill Cornell Medical Center), I became convinced that the key to health and well-being lies in the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit.

While my academic credentials provided practical tools with which to treat clients, I  knew conventional medicine alone was too mechanistic to provide what was needed.  I determined to work within an integrative paradigm.

I studied the Hakomi Method, a spiritually-oriented therapy with a focus on body-mind interaction.  Then I trained in Internal Family Systems Therapy, which takes into account the whole person and our need to integrate all aspects of our personality in the healing process.  I was among the first professionally-trained nutritionists to incorporate these approaches into my practice.

In 2000, I entered A Society of Souls, founded by Jason Shulman, beginning an intensive 4-year Integrated Kabbalistic Healing program, and I remain deeply committed to continued advanced training.  This nonsectarian practice provides an extremely valuable method for healing, facilitating a deep inner shift that nourishes all aspects of body, mind, and spirit.

My work is based on the fundamental concept of holistic oneness.  I draw on each of these therapies as they are appropriate to a client’s individual needs, integrating everything I do in a unique synthesis of ancient and modern techniques.

After 25 years in private practice in Manhattan, I am now based in the beautiful Hudson Valley where I am privileged to continue providing deep nourishment to those with physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual issues.  I consider doing this work an honor and I am nourished in turn by all those with whom I work.  It is truly a source of joy.
